Open House at the Fire Station

Tom had been driving by the Fire Station in our neighborhood and noticed they were having an Open House on, literally, the only weekend day for about four weeks when we had nothing scheduled.  So I asked the kids if they wanted to go and you can imagine what their response was.

Not only did they want to go, but they decided they should also make some cookies for the firefighters AND draw them pictures as well.  Uncle came over to go with us and suggested we walk to the station, since it's only about five blocks and the kids agreed, not quite realizing that two of those blocks are straight up hill.  We got their tired and a little sweaty and walked around the station until we figured out that we had to go inside the courtyard to ring the bell.  When we did that, a firefighter named Mike met us at the door.  He had a niece named Caroline and a nephew named Daniel, so we fit right in.

We got a tour of the station and got to ask all sorts of questions.  The kids had good questions like where the gas goes in the fire truck and what the big exhaust tube was attached to the side of it (it's just that, an exhaust tube - the tube is attached when the truck is about to be backed into location so that the exhaust doesn't build up in the garage and permeate into the rest of the building - when they pull out, it stays attached until the truck gets far enough away for the magnetic coupling to be pulled apart and it rubber bands back into the garage), and did they know who Marshall was from Paw Patrol (he's the fire dog).

The kids got to climb up in the truck to pose for a picture and wander around looking at everything.  Daniel pointed out the fire pole and asked if they really use it and Fireman Mike actually went up and showed us how they slide down the pole when there's a fire.

That container on the table is filled with chocolate chip cookies made by the kids.

Max is looking down at Caroline, who fell into the stairwell trying to pose for a picture.

There's Caroline trying to climb back up.

Yeah, she fell, but she's all OK now.

Here they are running back home.
And, of course, there's video of Fireman Mike on the firepole.
