Caroline's newest fashion stage

Caroline has decided she loves dresses.  Luckily, she inherited a lot of hand-me-down dresses from some friends and then found some more in the back room that had been handed down a ways back.  And they all fit now!  Unfortunately, she will eventually run out of all these dresses and I'm not sure if the pipeline to new hand-me-downs will still be around.

And now Caroline is wearing the baby cardigan - she's decided she likes the 12-18 month sweater as 5 year old accessory

This picture gave me Grapes of Wrath shivers

I have no idea who gave her this adorable skirt and the knee highs, but she was really digging this outfit.

Writing

Daniel and Max's teacher has mentioned from time to time that they seem to have a little bit of difficulty with strength in their fingers.  I have also noticed that neither of them has fully decided if they are left- or right-handed.   So I was excited to see these pictures that Uncle forwarded me of them working with a magnet board they got for their birthday to practice their letters.

Blood Moon

On Sunday, we went to the playground for a farewell playdate with Madeleine before she moves away to Sebastopol.  Then we all went down the street to Joe's Ice Cream for dinner and the kids somehow talked me into letting them go to the comic book store next door, where they each got an "inexpensive" toy - a couple of cars and a tiny little pony.

On the way home, we realized that we were coming up on the beginning of the Super Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse.  The kids' school has a solar system set up hanging from the ceiling and they are always excited to show me which planet is which, so I was sure they'd be into checking out the eclipse.

Sadly, it was really foggy and we couldn't see the moon when we got home.  So we went inside and I promised Caroline I would set an alarm and we would go back out in a half an hour to see if it had cleared up.

When we did, it was still foggy, but there were patches of clearing.  I have an app on my phone that will GPS locate you and then project the constellations and other celestial bodies onto the image that shows from the camera, and we identified that the moon was somewhere behind our house.  We walked up to the corner so we could look down the street and bumped into two young men who were looking for the same thing, but the street is lined with streetlights and there was no glimpse of any moon.  So we walked down to the other corner to see if we could get a better look.  As we walked, Caroline clutched the phone, looking at all the different stars and squealing when she saw Saturn on the screen.  We squinted and are fairly certain we saw the faint glow of the planet off in the distance.

We still didn't see the moon, but Caroline was jazzed about the activity of it.  As she walked back up the hill with me, holding my phone and watching the stars dance in front of her she told me this was "the best night of my whole life!"  When I giggled, she said, "Well, maybe not really, but it's really good!"

We went back inside to put on pajamas and then she insisted we go back out one more time.  At that point, the app showed that the moon should be right above our house, so we went across the street to look.  Still foggy.  I was disappointed on her behalf and started thumbing through Instagram looking for pictures from other people in clearer climes to show her.

At this point, she said, "I see it! I see the moon!"

I looked up, but it wasn't there.  So I looked back down, still scrolling for pictures of the moon.  And she tugged at my arm and pointed up and, wouldn't you know it? There was the moon!

The fog was rolling across it and so it came and went, but she'd found it.  She was so proud of herself - she claimed she had used her "Superman eyes".  She screamed at the top of her little lungs (which she does often and which is quite loud) for her brothers and Uncle to come outside to see.  They came across the street, looked up, saw the moon, and asked if they could go back inside and finish watching Rocket Raccoon.

So it was back to just me and Caroline.  She didn't want to give up, but eventually we went back inside and to bed.  Not the stargazing experience I had imagined, but a success overall.

That faint little blip is the red moon that Caroline saw through the fog

I couldn't get her to stand still for a picture - she was too busy dancing and singing "Oh yeah, it's the moon, oh yeah"

New Hair Cuts on Batman Day

Apparently, Saturday was Batman Day.  And obviously we needed to observe.  Not only did the kids choose Batman shirts to wear, they also brought Batman and Robin to hang out with us.

This is Caroline's version of a "superhero face"

Our activity for the day was haircuts.  Last June, we had our last "Sandy" hair cuts before she moved away and the kids have been apprehensive about getting their hair cut by a "new haircutter".  I reached out to the local multiples parents for suggestions of a new salon.  Another triplet mom recommended this salon, pointing out that they have a little race car for the kids to sit in for their hair cut and a kids play area.  This sounded like a good combination, so we made appointments and headed out.

When we walked in, we were greeted by a stylist with cool purple hair and the boys were a little afraid.  They whispered to me that they didn't know if they liked "the purple hair cutter".  But then they saw the play area and the pile of toys and their fears seemed to melt away.

Caroline went first, climbing up into the little car for her trim from the "purple hair cutter".  Before the snipping got underway, the stylist walked over to a big tv across the room and started a Captain America / Avengers animated movie.  The boys were quickly drawn away from the toys and settled into waiting chairs to watch.  And when it was their turn, with a different stylist, they got to sit in the car and be aimed at the tv screen as well.  And of course there was candy at the end of the visit!

Max looked at his picture and announced that he had "Robin hair", which meant, of course, that Daniel had "Bruce Wayne" hair.  Caroline had "Caroline hair" - and she was just fine with that!

Then and Now

The kids love seeing their baby pictures and this day they decided they should try to re-create them.  Perhaps I should try this again each four years...

Catching up on some anecdotes

Looking at baby pictures and I said, "aw, Caroline was so cute!"
Caroline looked and me and sang, "I still a-am!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Caroline chose my outfit to go out to see a matinee of Company. Shiny top, velvet skirt with beaded fringe, flats.  And she did my make up. And she told me I looked "fabulous".
Daniel said he didn't like me wearing dark lipstick or "beautiful things".
And Max opines that I looked "a little bit beautiful and a little bit not beautiful"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Caroline discovered my jewelry box, full of all the jewelry I never wear. I told her I was saving it for when she has pierced ears and wears earrings and jewelry.
C: "Maybe when I'm 10?"
Me: "Sure, when you're 10."
C: "and when I'm 10 can I wear these zebra earrings?"
Me: "of course"
C: "can I wear them to my SCHOOL when I'm 10?"
Me: "yes"
C: "I'm SO EXCITED!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You knew it would happen sooner or later - the toilet debacle.  Max flushed an orange down the toilet.  When asked why, he said it was because Daniel put it in there to wash it, but told him not to flush.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love that I'm not quite out of the "kids mispronounce things hilariously" stage. One day, Grandma offered to do some quick shopping for us. I asked the kids what to get and put it on the list.
Just now, Max burst into my room announcing, "I know what we forgot to get Grandma to get at the store! Chocolate Gamora bars!" Now, I know he meant granola, but any decent fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy has to giggle just a little at that concept.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Caroline has a little friend she met at a playground in the neighborhood. We were all invited to her cool bowling birthday party and Caroline continued to show her athletic leanings, coming in with the best score of the five kids she was bowling with.  Sometimes, seriously, I wonder who this little mountain goat is!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I was switching stations to find the Giants game, Caroline asked, "Is that hockey? Why do we have hockey on our TV?"
I don't know, Caroline, I don't know.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had a play date planned for one day on the weekend and it fell through, so I thought I'd distract the kids with a plan to go to the Academy of Sciences instead.  Caroline was having NONE of it - if she couldn't have a playdate with her little friend, then nobody was allowed to go anywhere or have ANY fun!
Finally, we got her calmed down and went and, predictably, everyone had a great time.  At one point, when we were in the "tube" surrounded by fish on all sides, the kids were squealing and pointing them out and a young teenage girl grabbed her ears and instinctively shushed them.  They were THAT loud.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Caroline was concerned there's a fly on the ceiling over her bed. I didn't have the energy to chase it out, so I told her I knew him, his name is Ferdinand the Fly, and he's here to make sure they feel safe in their room.
Caroline's mouth fell open and her eyes went wide in disbelief. She told me she wasn't sure that was true, but I swore I'd seen his resume and he'd worked with a lot of families and came very highly recommended. And when she tried to talk to him, I had to explain that Ferdinand is what's known as the strong, silent type.
I can't take full credit for this idea, as I was raised under the watchful eye of Staniel the Spider at Tahoe, who my father (Boppy to our readers) explained he had engaged to make sure we were OK upstairs in our bedroom at Tahoe.
The next day there was another fly, and that one was his cousin, Fernando.  That's how rusty my improv skils are - Ferdinand's cousin is Fernando.

Happy 5th Birthday!!!!!

We went back to the "Ropes" playground this time for a Ninja Turtle-themed party.  Which meant I had pizza and fruit and veggies to prepare ... and may have stolen a display idea from the internet...

Ninja Turtle fruits and veggies!

Michelangelo celery and carrots!

Leonardo in grapes and blueberries

Donatello in grapes and more grapes

Raphael with a mask made of strawberries
And Grandma got a great Ninja Turtle cake and cupcakes
The kids invited tons of friends and family and we ended up having over sixty people there, including about thirty kids.  Thank goodness there was a play structure!

Auntie came!

Caroline climbed

And climbed...

The boys drew the Ninja Turtles in chalk!

It's Donatello with his bo staff!

Caroline and Jeweletta had matching Ninja Turtle BFF shirts.
Boppy made it back from Florida for the party

Mommy actually got a moment to sit down and talk to people

A whole play structure, and the favorite activity is still "climb Uncle"

Caroline introduces her friend Madeleine to her friend Harmony

Gift bags!

And then it was time for cake!

Blowing out the candles

They got their own color coded cupcakes, as requested

Blue for Leonardo/Daniel

Red for Raphael/Caroline

And green for Max (we didn't think to get orange for Michelangelo!)

And they even got to open their presents at the party - making out with a whole new wardrobe of Ninja Turtle t-shirts and a ton of fun new toys!

And then they went home and tore into EVERYTHING before bedtime!
