Waxy Max

The past few weeks, Max has been slowly improving his walking ability, from a few stumbly steps at a time, straight through to this:

When he needs a rest, he puts his head down on the floor in a mini downward-facing dog.  Joe tells me a few days ago, he actually got his feet off the ground and did a little headstand. He had been rolling his head on the floor a little more during these stretches the last few days, and last night as I was cuddling him before bed, a big ball of ear wax plopped onto his shoulder.  I inspected and there was another piece nearly as large waiting to be rescued from the edge of his ear canal.  And the other side was pretty clogged, too.  So, maybe it wasn't that he was ignoring us all that time!  Maybe he just couldn't hear! (yeah, right)

Last weekend, Sam and Junior came for a visit and I indulged in one of my favorite activities - exploiting Sam's organizational and folding skills in exchange for letting her pick through the hand-me-downs for Junior.  Junior and Caroline had a lot of fun emptying out the laundry basket - every time we put something in, they'd take it out.  Max decided he enjoyed filling the basket back up later in the day, though, so it all worked out OK.

After Caroline saw how much fun it was putting clothes back IN the bin, she and Max sort of switched roles:

On Wednesday, we took the babies over to the East Bay for a photo shoot with Santa.  Caroline decided to reprise her role as The Girl Who Never Smiles.  She plays this part any time we pay someone to take her picture.  She was happy putting on her brand new flannel Xmas PJs, super smiley getting out of the car at our destination, and then Queen Pouty the minute the photographer is in sight.  After fifteen to twenty minutes of some laughter, some tears, and a lot of screaming, we packed back up into the car and jumped into traffic to meet Sam, Mike, and Junior and head out to dinner.  Four adults, four babies, one Applebee's waiter.  I hope they pay him well.  Everyone was pretty well behaved.  At least until Caroline decided it was time to show off her PJs, AND her celery, by standing up on her high chair seat during dinner:

At home, we're celebrating with our own tree - including the 30-year old popcorn we strung at my grandmother's house.  Every year, the popcorn strand gets shorter, but this year we decided to keep the decorations high up on the tree to avoid any tugging by the babies, so it looks almost like it did when it was full length.

As you can see, we also decided to surround the tree in Baby Jail.  It has worked - the Teenies hardly notice the tree at all - the big attraction is dumping their toys over the fence so Daddy or I have to go get them.  But, just in case they did decide to go for the tree, we only used soft ornaments this year.  The only exceptions were their first Christmas photo ornaments.

Oh, and this cool one they got in the mail from our friend Polly!

Sometimes, reading books to triplets is a bit of a challenge.  In fact, reading to them just two at a time can be a little much.  Here I am with the boys trying to make it through the Itsy Bitsy Spider:

Addendum:

I just found these pictures Daddy snapped at the restaurant, showing why it is Caroline is so much littler than her brothers:

Daniel eats french fries

Max eats french fries

Caroline eats celery!
